With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is a growing global demand, including in Korea, for the cultivation of AI professionals. In response, Yonsei University established the Department of Artificial Intelligence within the Graduate School in 2020. Affiliated with the Sinchon Campus, the Department aims to nurture world-class experts in artificial intelligence, a core technology of future industries. The curriculum builds on foundational courses in computer programming, mathematics, algorithms, and statistics, and offers systematic education in cutting-edge AI technologies such as machine learning, big data, computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing.Furthermore, the Department will play a pivotal role in AI convergence education across various disciplines within Yonsei University, Korea’s largest comprehensive university, establishing itself as the central hub for AI education and research at the University.
To overcome the current limitations of AI technology, the Department focuses on developing lightweight, efficient, and human-cooperative AI core technologies based on knowledge and cognition.Research and education are centered around three core areas—Learning, Architecture, and Perception—with over 30 related AI core courses offered in the curriculum.
As a comprehensive university, Yonsei University leverages its strength in diverse fields—medicine, engineering, business, and humanities—to lead AI+X convergence research. The University also offers AI convergence courses across the entire student body, focusing on four major AI+X application areas: Medicine, Engineering, Financial Services, and Humanities.
As the AI sector continues to grow rapidly, demand for AI experts is increasing worldwide.Graduates of the Department of Artificial Intelligence are well-positioned to become AI developers and researchers at leading domestic and international companies. They can also pursue startup ventures or build careers in various industries through AI convergence.Further academic advancement through doctoral programs is also actively encouraged for those seeking deeper research opportunities.
The Yonsei University AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) Innovative Talent Education and Research Group aims to respond to the rapid advancements in AI and the growing societal demand by moving beyond fragmented research toward large-scale, integrated studies and in-depth education. The Group’s vision is to cultivate world-class AGI researchers and establish a global research hub.Particular emphasis is placed on research and education in Interactive AGI, AI+X convergence, multimodal foundation models, and specialized areas such as healthcare and robotics, with a goal of entering the global Top 20 AI education and research groups within ten years. To achieve these goals, the Group is pursuing 13 strategic initiatives focused on four key areas: education, research, industry-academia collaboration, and globalization. It is also building a future-ready AI talent development system through interdisciplinary convergence, international partnerships, and a robust high-performance research infrastructure.
