Department of Artificial Intelligence

Vision

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is a growing global demand, including in Korea, for the cultivation of AI professionals. In response, Yonsei University established the Department of Artificial Intelligence within the Graduate School in 2020. Affiliated with the Sinchon Campus, the Department aims to nurture world-class experts in artificial intelligence, a core technology of future industries. The curriculum builds on foundational courses in computer programming, mathematics, algorithms, and statistics, and offers systematic education in cutting-edge AI technologies such as machine learning, big data, computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing.Furthermore, the Department will play a pivotal role in AI convergence education across various disciplines within Yonsei University, Korea’s largest comprehensive university, establishing itself as the central hub for AI education and research at the University.

Research field

LE.A.P Program

To overcome the current limitations of AI technology, the Department focuses on developing lightweight, efficient, and human-cooperative AI core technologies based on knowledge and cognition.Research and education are centered around three core areas—Learning, Architecture, and Perception—with over 30 related AI core courses offered in the curriculum.

  • LEarning : Research on the advancement of AI learning models and overcoming their limitations; development of explainable AI technologies and Human-in-the-loop AI models to lead foundational AI technologies.
  • Architecture : Research on computer systems and architectures that form AI platforms, development of next-generation deep learning accelerators, and architectural design technologies to advance AI computing.
  • Perception : Research on enhancing and optimizing perception technologies for language, speech, and vision cognition, and promoting AI+X convergence studies. This includes advancing the generation, enhancement, and understanding of language, speech, and visual content.
MESH Program

As a comprehensive university, Yonsei University leverages its strength in diverse fields—medicine, engineering, business, and humanities—to lead AI+X convergence research. The University also offers AI convergence courses across the entire student body, focusing on four major AI+X application areas: Medicine, Engineering, Financial Services, and Humanities.

  • AI+Medicine : Utilizing vast medical data from the globally renowned Yonsei University Health System, research and education efforts aim to revolutionize healthcare services and the medical industry through core precision medicine technologies and explainable clinical AI. Collaborations include global institutions like MIT, Stanford University, and Cleveland Clinic, as well as domestic startups and SMEs such as InBody and DEEPNOID.
  • AI+Engineering : In collaboration with cutting-edge engineering fields, Yonsei University is advancing AI technologies essential to emerging industries like smart factories, robotics, and autonomous vehicles, through partnerships with leading global research and education institutions, industries, and corporate internship programs.
  • AI+financial Service : Through close collaboration with the School of Business and the Graduate School of Information, AI-based courses addressing entrepreneurship, business, and finance are provided. Partnerships with major Korean financial institutions and global players like Barclays aim to develop AI interpretation technologies for financial decision-making and services. Yonsei also fosters entrepreneurship through initiatives like YVIP and the Yonsei AI Investment Fund.
  • AI+Humanity : Research and education programs focus on improving quality of life and creating social value by addressing technological and policy issues related to AI ethics and law. Collaborative projects with public institutions like the Seoul Metropolitan Government aim to promote AI innovation for marginalized communities and socially vulnerable groups.

Career Opportunities

As the AI sector continues to grow rapidly, demand for AI experts is increasing worldwide.Graduates of the Department of Artificial Intelligence are well-positioned to become AI developers and researchers at leading domestic and international companies. They can also pursue startup ventures or build careers in various industries through AI convergence.Further academic advancement through doctoral programs is also actively encouraged for those seeking deeper research opportunities.
