Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Vision

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the College of Computing, Yonsei University was established as the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Science in 1982 to nurture professionals in the field of computer science. After moving to the College of Engineering in 1996 to reflect the diverse needs of applied studies and engineering, it was established as the College of Computing in 2022 to lead the artificial intelligence paradigm such as the 4th industrial revolution as a cutting-edge discipline, and to conduct convergence research and convergence education inside and outside the school and transferred. For more than 40 years, it has been conducting world-class core research and convergence research, nurturing outstanding talents in the field of computer science. Currently, there are about 370 undergraduate students, about 200 master's and doctoral graduate students, and 22 professors. Study of computer science focus on nurture world-class computer science, software, and artificial intelligence experts who will contribute to the nation and human development with responsibility and creativity as leaders in the information society and artificial intelligence society. The core of this education is to focus on developing specific computer skills for creative thinking and insightful talents who can understand and solve actual problems.

Research field

The research fields of computer science include data structure and algorithm analysis, which are the basics of problem solving through software and programming, and computer theory. Computer system research is also the foundation of computer science in computer architecture, the latest GPU and manycore architecture, and high-performance computing, as well as operating systems and system software and compiler/programming languages that manage resources in distributed processing systems. The Internet and computer networks that connect and configure platforms, 5G/6G mobile communication, and IoT research fields are active. Furthermore, blockchain and information security for safe communication in systems and networks are also important fields of computer science research. Databases, big data, and data mining/text mining, which are the foundations of data science, are core research fields in a new data-centric society. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning and multi-modal artificial intelligence technology, and natural language processing technology (NLP), which are in the spotlight as the leading technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, are natural core research fields of computer science. Computer graphics, multimedia, and human-computer interaction (HCI) technologies for virtual reality and augmented reality, which are opening up a new cyber world with artificial intelligence, are also major areas of research in computer science. New computing paradigms such as brain computing and quantum computing are also essential future research fields to lead computer science.

Course

Computer science plays a pivotal role in leading core technology fields such as the information industry, data industry, and artificial intelligence industry in the future society. As well as the need for software and artificial intelligence manpower in the field of information technology, social demands in all industries, including all fields of human society and future cyber fields are rapidly increasing. For example, core algorithms and machine learning technologies for autonomous vehicles, cognitive and mobility technologies in the robot industry, and computer science technologies such as software and artificial intelligence are essential in most fields of the healthcare industry. Currently, graduates of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering are active in various fields. Typically university professors, computer-related research institutes and corporate researchers, researchers at domestic and foreign conglomerates such as Samsung Electronics/Hyundai Motors/Google/Apple/Facebook, and corporate management and system application consultants, start-ups (Daum Communications, Virtualtech, Socar, Vibe, etc.), personal experts in computer or artificial intelligence technology, public officials (technical examination), and patent attorneys.
