Department of Artificial Intelligence

Vision

With the advent of the era of the 4th industrial revolution, there is an urgent need to nurture AI specialists around the world, including Korea. In order to meet these demands, Yonsei University established the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 (50 students for master's/doctoral programs are selected every year), and then established the Department of Artificial Intelligence, an undergraduate department, in 2021. The Department of Artificial Intelligence at Yonsei University is a new department belonging to the Sinchon Campus, which recruits the first freshmen (20 students) in 2022, and aims to cultivate the world's best experts in the field of "Artificial Intelligence," a key technology for future industries. To this end, we provide systematic education on the latest artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning, big data, computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing on the basis of basic curriculum such as computer programming, mathematics, algorithms, and statistics. Furthermore, it will play a major role in AI convergence education with various other major fields belonging to Yonsei University, the largest university in Korea, and establish itself as the center of AI education and research throughout the school.

Research field

LE.A.P Program

By overcoming the limitations of existing AI technologies, we are focusing our research efforts on the development of core AI capabilities in three directions: LEarning, Architecture, and Perception with the goal of “Developing lightweight and efficient AI core source technology that cooperates with humans and uses knowledge and cognition” and 30 related AI core subjects are opened and reflected in the curriculum

  • LEarning : Leading AI source technology by conducting research on the advancement of AI learning models and overcoming limitations, research on explainable AI technology, and research on human-in-the-loop AI models
  • Architecture : Advancement of AI computing by researching computer systems and architectures constituting an artificial intelligence platform for accelerating and optimizing artificial intelligence models, developing next-generation deep learning model accelerators, and researching machine learning architecture design technology
  • Perception : Advancement of language/voice/visual cognitive intelligence and advancement and optimization of cognitive technology for AI+X convergence research. Conduct research for the advancement of language/audio/video generation and improvement and comprehension skills
MESH Program

Yonsei University, as a comprehensive university, focuses on four AI+X (Medicine, Engineering, financial Service, Humanity) application areas to maximize its strengths in securing a diverse and rich foundation for AI applied research such as medicine, engineering, business, and humanities. +X Convergence research is conducted and AI convergence courses are opened for all students.

  • AI+Medicine (Artificial intelligence and medical convergence) : Based on the vast medical data accumulated at the world-class Yonsei Medical Center, AI medical / Conducting health care research and education is conducted to innovate medical services and the medical industry through the realization of core precision medicine technology and explainable clinical applications. Leading overseas universities and medical companies such as MIT, Stanford University, and Cleveland Clinic participate as cooperative institutions, and in particular, domestic startups such as InBody and Deepnoid and SMEs pioneer new medical fields to utilize AI + medical technology as a future growth engine.
  • AI+Engineering (Artificial Intelligence and Engineering Convergence) : Along with the cutting-edge majors of the College of Engineering, we established a cooperative system with domestic and foreign companies and world-leading research and education institutions related to various industrial cooperation projects and recruitment-related internships to develop and research engineering-related AI technologies such as smart factories, robots, and autonomous vehicles that will become the core of new industries in the future.
  • AI+financial Service (Artificial intelligence and management/finance convergence) : For close education and research cooperation with business schools and graduate schools of information, AI courses are opened to solve problems related to startups, business, and finance. Also data-based AI interpretation technologies are developed for various analyses necessary for financing and operation of global financial companies such as Barclays. In particular, we led new businesses and startup programs through YVIP and Yonsei AI Investment Association.
  • AI+Humanity (Artificial Intelligence and Humanities/Law Convergence) : Researching technological and policy issues that can improve the quality of life and create social added value through AI technology, and combine the humanities and social sciences such as AI ethics and law with AI Established a convergence education/research program. Especially for the social contribution of AI technology, we plan to operate AI technology innovation and diffusion programs for the socially underprivileged and AI vulnerable class together with public institutions such as Seoul Metropolitan City.

The demand for AI talent is rapidly increasing worldwide, and students who graduate from the Department of Artificial Intelligence can choose various career paths. It is easy to start a business that utilizes AI developers and researchers, or talents, and it is possible to enter an AI graduate school to develop professionalism.
