With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is an urgent need to nurture AI specialists around the world, including Korea. In order to meet these demands, Yonsei University established the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence in 2019 (50 students for graduate programs (MS, PhD) per year). Then in 2021, the university established the Department of Artificial Intelligence for undergraduate students. The Department of Artificial Intelligence at Yonsei University is a relatively new department belonging to the Sinchon Campus, which recruited the first class of 20 students in 2022. The department aims to cultivate world-class experts in the field of "Artificial Intelligence," which will shape the core of industries in the future. To this end, we provide carefully designed education programs that cover both the latest artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning, big data, computer vision, robotics, and natural language processing as well as the core computer science curriculum that includes computer programming, mathematics, algorithms, and statistics. Furthermore, the program offered by the department will play a major role in AI convergence education that will help form connections with various other departments at Yonsei University, the largest university in Korea, and help put the department as the center of AI education and research throughout the school.
To overcome the limitations of existing AI technologies, we focus our efforts developing core AI capabilities in three areas: LEarning, Architecture, and Perception. Our goal is to “Develop lightweight and efficient foundational core AI technology that cooperates with humans and uses knowledge and cognition” through offering 30 related AI courses through a specialized curriculum
Yonsei University, as a comprehensive university, focuses on four AI+X application areas (Medicine, Engineering, financial Service, Humanity) to maximize the synergistic strengths from delivering the strong foundation AI applied research to the application areas. The department performs AI+X convergence research and offers AI convergence courses for all students.
The demand for AI talent is rapidly increasing worldwide, and students who graduate from the Department of Artificial Intelligence can choose among various career paths. They can start businesses that utilize AI developers and researchers; they can also enter AI graduate schools to further develop mastery of the topic.
